ASTROLOGY AND ASTRO-CALC
Astrology, although the subject of numerous controversies, remains the Mother
of Science. Ancient man's search for meaning led his eyes upwards while the
recording of celestial events for the purpose of predicting the future led to
the development of mathematics, geometry and astronomy. Those persons who have
tried to prove that astrology predicts the future have failed to do so, as that
is not the function of astrology. Those persons who have tried to disprove any
validity to astrology have also failed (and often become fanatic converts to
it!) to disprove it, as there is some cosmic force that marks us at our birth.
Just what that power is, and how to correctly interpert its influence, is still
the subject of serious study by both astrologers and disbelieving scientists.
I make no claim beyond the mathematical: this program provides House Cusps,
Planetary position, Moon and Node position, and Full Aspects (relationships
between planets forming geometric ratios.) These numbers are accurate to
within a degree (actually within a minute for anyone born between 1900 and
2050.) Further regression or progression of the algolrithm yield progressively
less accurate results, but remain accurate within three degrees (except Pluto)
from 1650 to 2250. I certainly expect to update the program before 2250
becomes a problem for astrologers!
USING ASTRO-CALC
Minimum requirements are an IBM-PC or compatible, 128K RAM and one disk drive.
Load your operating system (PC-DOS or MS-DOS, V. 2.0 or later) and insert the
disk containing the ASTRO-CALC program. At your DOS prompt (often "A:>"),
enter "ASTROCAL" and press the return key. The program will start running.
You should see the commercial for donations since this is the Shareware version
followed by several bells and the first input prompt (Name of Subject.) You
are now ready to begin data input.
Information needed to plot the chart of a person's birth or other event is:
Date, Time, Hours west of 0 degrees (to include a Daylight Savings Time
correction, if necessary), Latitude and Longitude. Latitude and Longitude
may be obtained from an almanac or atlas, and may be within 30 minutes.
Hours west of 0 degrees is a correction for local time, and is 5 hours for
the East Coast, and one hour later for each time zone westward, ie. 6 CST,
7 MST and 8 PST. Persons born in foreign countries should consult a time
zone chart. Note that persons born east of 0 degrees (say Europe or Asia)
should enter a negative number: Two hours east of 0 degrees (Italy) should
be entered as -2. Also note that if Daylight Savings Time is in effect you
should add one extra hour. An almanac can provide the DST information for
recent years. Not all countries observe DST, and those that do sometimes
begin and end on different dates. Here in the US, DST starts on the last
Sunday in April (unless the last day of April is Sunday, in which case it
starts a week earlier) and ends the last Sunday in October (unless the last
day of October is Sunday, in which case it starts a week earlier.)
Date is entered as MM,DD,YYYY where MM is a digital value for the month,
DD is the date and YYYY is the year. Each is prompted for seperately.
Time is entered as A/P, HH, MM where HH is hours in standard (1-12) format,
MM is minutes in standard (00-59) format and A/P is either AM or PM. Please
note that only the first letter of the meridian need be entered.
Hours west of 0 deg. is entered as a number between 0 and 12. As noted
earlier, persons born EAST of 0 deg. should be entered as a negative number.
Longitude and Latitude are entered as DDD.MM where DDD is the degrees and
MM is the minutes. Values of 0 to 179 are valid for degrees west and from
1 to 180 fpr degrees east. Values of 0 to 59 are valid for all minutes.
I have provided some error checking on the input, false times and dates are
going to be noticed and you will be asked to re-enter. If you want to
experiment with dates well beyond our own century, the program will let you
only after verifying that you wish to do so.
The output screens contain all the information to cast a graphic natal (or
other) horoscope. Later versions may have a graphic representation, and
the Professional Version features a graphic representation on printer. I
have made sure that the screens are seperated (houses & planets are seperate
from the aspects chart by a "Press Return" prompt) so that two Print Screens
will give you hard copy on your printer of all the output.
I hope you have a good time with this program. If you know about astrology
already, you won't need anything more. If you are a novice to astrology, you
may consider purchasing some books on astrology. The most comprehensive book
on astrology is probably Lewellin's Astrological Horoscope Maker and Delineator
which is available through most occult bookstores. Additional books may be
recommended by your bookstore. Astrology for Adults and Linda Goodman's
Sunsigns are also helpful in understanding the meanings of the numbers that
this program outputs. Good Luck!
